Sawa-I-Lau Caves

The majestic Sawa-I-Lau Caves are one of the ‘must-do’ activities for travellers visiting Fiji’s spectacular Blue Lagoon region. The ancient limestone formations, carved by constant wave action are hidden within an attractive little island. According to legend, a young chief once hid with his betrothed in the cave after her family threatened to marry her off to a rival chief. Every day he would swim into this secret haven with food for the girl until they eventually both escaped to an island together, where they lived happily forever. The sacred Sawa-I-Lau Caves are also known as the resting place of the 10-headed ancient Fijian god, Ulutini. From your resort in the Blue Lagoon, a scenic boat trip up to the caves is worth doing for its own sake. Then there’s the magical experience of the caves themselves – venture into the caves, guided by friendly Fijians to explore the secrets within. The first of the caverns is simply magnificent. Light filters through a hole in the ceiling, allowing visitors to look around in awe. Those up for more excitement can choose to enter a secondary, more secretive, cavern via an underwater tunnel.

Weather Advisory #2

DISRUPTION TO YASAWA DAY TRIPS

Awesome Adventures Fiji – South Sea Cruises Group
Wednesday 28th January 2026 – 7.00am

Bula,

The Fiji Met continue to have a Strong Wind Alert in place for the Mamanuca & Yasawa Islands due to Tropical Disturbance TD07F however we are not forecasting this system to directly affect Fiji.

Yasawa Day Trips have been suspended across Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th of January 2026. All other South Sea Cruises products and services remain scheduled to operate, however please note:

  • All resorts and passengers alike should be aware that if localised weather conditions are deemed not safe to operate then South Sea Cruises Operations or the respective vessel Master may alter or suspend vessel services.
  • South Sea Cruises forecast that the small boat tendering process from vessel to shore (or vice versa) may be challenging later today and will only be undertaken in locations where vessel Masters deem it safe to do so. In some cases, the tendering process could be suspended or abandoned with little or no notice in the interest of customer and crew safety.
  • Some localized activities such as outer reef snorkelling or non-motorized watersports may be restricted subject to sea conditions.

South Sea Cruises will continue to monitor weather and sea conditions and issue a further memo only if required.

Customers travelling on an impacted Yasawa Day Trip who need to amend, change or cancel their booking with South Sea Cruises should email: reservations@ssc.com.fj or call +679 9995512.

We encourage these customers to switch to any number of our other Day Trip products which remain scheduled to operate.

Vinaka.
